INSIDE THE VILLAGE: For police, there is no such thing as a routine call

'If you are called to be a member of the law enforcement community, you know there are risks — and you know there is that possibility that the next time you put on your uniform could be your last'

Welcome back to Inside the Village, a one-of-a-kind podcast where all news is local — and no topic is off-limits.

On this week's episode, we take a closer look at the tragic shooting that claimed the lives of two South Simcoe police constables: Devon Northrup and Morgan Russell.

Our guest is Peter Leon, a retired OPP officer who now works as communications co-ordinator for the Barrie Police Service. His city will be hosting Thursday's funeral for the fallen officers, an event that is expected to attract thousands of fellow police officers — and large crowds of mourners watching as the procession steers toward Sadlon Arena.

"In policing, there is no such thing as a routine call," Leon says. "That next call could be a very, very serious occurrence, and certainly that is what we saw last Tuesday evening."

Launched in April, Inside the Village is a news and current affairs podcast that provides a weekly window into some of the best local journalism from across Village Media's chain of Ontario newsrooms. The program also explores bigger-picture issues that impact people across the province.

Every episode is available on this news site /insidethevillage. If you prefer the audio version, it is available wherever you find your favourite podcasts.
