From hops to red tape, MP hears challenges faced by local businesses

Chamber of Commerce welcomes federal minister Karina Gould on tour of its members

MP Karina Gould,  Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, dropped by several local businesses during a recent tour coordinated by the Burlington Chamber of Commerce.

"These visits help the Burlington Chamber of Commerce keep the concerns of members top of mind in Ottawa," noted the Chamber in their newsletter. "We are fortunate to have an MP who consistently engages with the Chamber staff and members."

The tour included stops at:

  • Nickel Brook Brewing Company: Owner John Romano walked Gould and the Chamber staff through the challenges with local red-tape he faced when relocating his business, as well as supply chain challenges – their hops come from Eastern Europe.

  • Laurel Steel: Wayne Dewitt and Malin Schouten discussed the steel Industry and shared that their expansion will be completed this summer.

  • Golfers Creek: Owners Jas Makkar and Aman Saggu discussed their new business and the challenges and delays with city licensing. They also shared the reasons why they wanted to be located in Burlington.

  • Duck Donuts: The tour ended ended at one of our new businesses, where the guests had a chance to make some donuts. Stuart Reid shared his story of perseverance – they were scheduled to open in the summer of 2020 – and how the wait was worth it to be located in Burlington.
