The city of Burlington raised the World Elder Abuse Awareness Day flag in the civic square on Tuesday.

The World Elder Abuse Awareness Day flag is flying outside of city hall today, following a flag raising ceremony this morning.

This year World Elder Abuse Awareness Day is spotlighting older persons in emergencies, including natural disasters, pandemics, or conflicts that disproportionately affect older persons.

World Elder Abuse Awareness Day started in 2006 by the International Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse, and recognized by the United Nations in 2011.

Residents of Burlington can request a flag raising on the city website at least 30 days prior to the proposed day of the event.
