Suspect charged with arson following series of dumpster fires

A quick response by Halton Police and Burlington Fire results in arson arrest with minimal damage to property.

On May 17 at 11:30 a.m., The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) responded a series of garbage dumpster fires that were intentionally set on commercial business properties in the area Guelph Line and Fairview Street in Burlington. HRPS officers attended and after a brief search located the suspect a short distance away. Burlington Fire also attended quickly extinguishing the fires resulting in minor damage to property. No physical injuries were sustained.

As a result of the investigation, Matthew Grant (42) of no fixed address, has been charged with the following:

  • three counts of arson
  • two counts of mischief under $5,000
  • two counts of obstruct peace officer
  • utter threat to cause death
  • failure to comply with probation order
  • possession of a controlled substance (fentanyl)
  • fail to leave premises when directed

Grant was held in custody pending a bail hearing.
