MS Canada is inspired by a vision of a world free of multiple sclerosis. Toward that end, MS Canada works tirelessly with researchers, partners, volunteers, and individuals living with MS to bring about positive change through their annual MS Walk.

Brenda Rosychuk, Manager Western Canada Community Fundraising says, “Our MS Walk brings communities together from coast to coast. We’re a community that stands out for Canadians living with MS and we celebrate their strengths and resilience. And on this day, we want to bring people from across Canada closer together to be part of something bigger and move us closer to a world free of MS.”

What is multiple sclerosis?

Multiple sclerosis, is a chronic autoimmune disease of the central nervous system, affecting more than 90,000 Canadians. In fact, Canada has one of the highest rates of MS in the world. On average, 12 Canadians are diagnosed every day, and most individuals are between the ages of 20 and 49.

MS is considered an episodic disability meaning that the severity and duration of episodes of illness and disability can vary, often followed by periods of wellness. Its unpredictable nature, characterized by a range of symptoms from fatigue and numbness to impaired mobility and cognitive decline presents significant challenges to those living with the condition. However, through initiatives like the MS Walk, the narrative shifts from one of despair to one of resilience, empowerment, and hope.

What is MS Walk?

The MS Walk, held in cities and towns across Canada on Sunday, May 26th encourages participants to take steps toward the goal where MS is but a memory. The MS Walk is a community-driven fundraising event for Canadians affected by MS. Rosychuk says, “When people are taking action in registering and fundraising for the MS Walk, they are creating a huge positive impact, not only in Ontario but across Canada.”

At its core, the MS Walk is more than a fundraiser; it symbolizes a collective commitment to building awareness, supporting research, and providing resources for those impacted by MS. Moreover, the MS Canada Walk serves as a platform for advocacy, amplifying the voices of those affected by MS and raising awareness about the challenges they face. By shining a spotlight on the challenges of living with the disease, the MS Walk fosters empathy and understanding, while combating stigma and misconceptions surrounding MS.

Participants have a shared purpose and that is to make a tangible difference in the lives of those impacted by MS. This sense of unity amplifies the impact of the event, turning it into a powerful catalyst for change. Together, they’ll share stories and cheer each other on as they strive to reach their fundraising goals.

Benefits of the funds raised

People living with MS across Canada are at the heart of everything MS Canada does. The money raised ensures that people affected by MS receive quality access and support that they need in whichever community they live. Their priority is to ensure that individuals across the country can access support programs and services, regardless of where they live.

Some examples of this programming include,

  • Virtual wellness
  • 1:1 peer support
  • MS Knowledge Network

Beyond its immediate impact, the MS Walk is infused with the overarching vision of a world free of multiple sclerosis. It imbodies the collective dream of researchers, healthcare professional, advocates, families, and individuals with MS, who envision a future where MS no longer impacts their lives. This vision fuels not only the fundraising efforts but also the ongoing research endeavors aimed at unraveling the complexities of MS and developing more effective treatments and ultimately a cure.
