INSIDE THE VILLAGE: At Tim Hortons, your privacy is worth a coffee and doughnut

Roasted by the privacy commissioner for illegally tracking customers on its app, Tim Hortons proposed a controversial settlement: a free beverage and baked good

Welcome back to Inside the Village, a one-of-a-kind podcast where all news is local—and no topic is off-limits.

How much is your privacy worth? For Tim Hortons, the answer appears to be a hot beverage and a baked good.

That is what the iconic company offered customers in its proposed settlement of multiple class-actions lawsuits triggered by revelations that the Hortons app secretly tracked people’s movements.

Is a free coffee and doughnut adequate compensation for such a serious breach of privacy? We ask Jasminka Kalajdzic, an associate professor of law who leads the Class Action Clinic at the University of Windsor.

Launched in April, Inside the Village is a news and current affairs podcast that provides a weekly window into some of the best local journalism from across Village Media's chain of Ontario newsrooms — including our latest addition to the network, BurlingtonToday.com. The program also explores bigger-picture issues that impact people across the province.

Every episode is available on this news site /insidethevillage. If you prefer the audio version, it is available wherever you find your favourite podcasts.
