Sustainability focused engineering group opens its doors in Burlington

Ulteig has worked on solar and wind farms across the United States and Canada

Engineering consultant firm Ulteig celebrated opening its Burlington office at 3115 Harvester Rd. earlier this month.

The company focuses on power, renewable energy, transportation and water systems and has previously worked on sites in Welland, Belleville, Brantford and more and employs around 50 people at the Burlington office.

“Our purpose is creating and solving for a sustainable future,” Doug Jaeger, president and CEO of Ulteig, said. “We work in what we call the lifeline sectors. As far as projects in this area, it will more than likely be in the water space. Water treatment, automation and system integration to help manage water treatment facilities in the area.”

The Burlington office represents a growth opportunity for the company after their acquisition of NLS (Next Level SCADA), which had previously been located in Hamilton. The new office space is modernized and open, located on the third floor of the building with a view of the QEW and close proximity to Burlington GO Station.

“We’re trying to reflect a future that looks more like our culture, which is that of a very collaborative organization,” Jaeger said. “We wanted a space that reflected that, and Burlington is a vibrant community. The economy is really healthy, it has access to the highways, it has international business and it’s just a really cool community to be a part of.”

Rory Nisan, Ward 3 councillor and deputy mayor for the environment, spoke at the celebration.

“It shows how Burlington is growing,” Nisan said. “We’re attracting some top notch businesses into the community, and when you put sustainability at the centre of what you do, you can foster those alliances to build an amazing community.”

Ulteig has created several new jobs in the area through their expansion, including systems integrator positions across the Halton region to work on updating and connecting existing water systems.

“We  do quite a bit of work in the Halton region,” Mark Presti, director of sales operations at Ulteig, said.” We’re on the Halton SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) roster, so we’re constantly picking up jobs at all the different wastewater facilities. We’ve done work at most of the plants in the Halton region at this point.”

Ulteig’s focus on sustainable infrastructure fits into Burlington’s increased prioritization of renewable energy production after the creation of the city’s Climate Action Plan, which was introduced in April 2020, and encourages reducing carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions alongside preparation for warmer and less stable weather.
