Burlington Cougars best Oakville Blades to win season opener

Second-period goal by Justin Legault sealed the victory on home ice Friday night

Season opening jitters didn't slow down the Burlington Cougars as they edged the Oakville Blades 3-1 at Burlington Central Arena Friday night (Sept. 8).

The Blades' Marco Costante drew first blood at 3.42 of the opening frame but Cougar Tom Karmiris evened the score at 11.58, sending teams to the dressing rooms even 1-1.

It was a  tight-checking game as both teams tested one another's mettle but a late effort at 17.48 in the second frame by Justin Legault with Jack Natyshak and Stephen Alexander assisting proved to be the game-winning goal.

The Blades were pressing late in the third but couldn't get the equalizer. An empty-netter by Eric Bertelson at 19.26 sealed their fate.

Goaltender Kyle Metson got the win, stopping 48 of 49 shots.
