August 1st, 1939 - April 17th, 2024

Passed peacefully at Joseph Brant Hospital on Wednesday, April 17, 2024 at the age of 84. Loving husband of Naoko for 50 years; devoted father of Anne and Marc (Andrea); proud grandfather of Charlie and Ellie; and caring uncle to Jayne (Jason) and Jim (Michelle). Jay is predeceased by his brother Edward, his father Jack, mother Marianna (nee Fell), and stepfather Kenneth Corbin.

Born and raised in Hamilton, Ontario, Jay grew up an avid reader, passionate about history, curious about the world, and dedicated to public service. Upon graduating from McMaster and attending teacher’s college, he joined the Foreign Service for the Government of Canada. His first overseas posting was in Japan, where he met Naoko, and together they built a life that took them from Belgium to Pakistan, then closer to home from Saskatoon to Dallas. After 27-years as a diplomat, Jay retired and spent 14 years teaching – both overseas (in India) and in the Peel District School Board.

Whether in the classroom or hosting get togethers, Jay relished any opportunity to regale (politely captive) audiences with tales of his adventures abroad and discuss current events. He loved classical music, rugby, and historical fiction, and never forgot the central role the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders played in shaping the course of his life. Laughter and curiosity were a constant. He will be dearly missed by those most important to him – his friends and family.

The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Billings Court Manor, who became extended family during Jay’s time there, and the ICU staff at Joseph Brant Hospital for the care and compassion shown over the last few weeks.

In lieu of flowers, donations in Jay’s honour to the Joseph Brant Hospital Foundation or the Heart & Stroke Foundation would be sincerely appreciated by the family.

Arrangements entrusted to Smith's Funeral Home
