Halton police officer dragged by stolen vehicle, suffers minor injuries

Halton Regional Police have made an arrest in connection with an attempted auto theft last week in Milton in which an officer was dragged trying to apprehend a suspect in a stolen vehicle.

On Feb. 21 at approximately 3:15 a.m., police were dispatched to an address in the area of Woodward Avenue and Thompson Road North after thieves attempted to steal a 2024 Toyota Tundra pickup truck.

Officers quickly attended the area at which time several suspects fled on foot, Halton Regional Police said in a news release.

While attempting to arrest a male in the suspect vehicle, one officer was dragged approximately 50 metres before falling to the ground suffering minor injuries, according to police.

The driver of the suspect vehicle escaped, however after continued investigation a suspect who fled on foot was located and arrested in the back yard of a neighbouring residence.

Takiyoudine Oumerzouk, 23, of Montreal was charged with the following:

  • Theft of Motor Vehicle
  • Obstruct Peace Officer
  • Failure to Comply with Release Order

At the time of his arrest,  Oumerzouk was on a release order with conditions not to leave the Province of Quebec.

Oumerzouk was held in custody pending a bail hearing in Milton.

None of the allegations have been tested in court and Oumerzouk is considered innocent unless proven guilty.
