When people were looking for work or wondering if they were going to keep their job during the pandemic, Muhammad Baig decided to start a business to support his community in a multitude of ways.
In fact Muhammad, who owns and operates Baig Security in Burlington, can be found spending his days doing something that helps or enhances his community, both personally and through his security company that he launched in 2021.
“I started in the middle of the pandemic, I was just looking to give back,” he said. “I had a lot of success in the HR side of things, and my goal with the security company was to provide jobs because there wasn’t a lot of work, and a lot of things were shut down.”
Muhammad, who comes from a successful career in HR and training, said he also wanted to protect the people and places in his community, and one of his first clients was his local Mosque.
“I wanted to make my mom proud, and I wanted to help so I thought, I have a security company I can give back because this was a time when the Mosque really needed security as well,” he said, adding that as business quickly grew, he stopped charging them over a year ago.
While not his intention, Muhammad’s brand awareness grew immensely providing security for the Mosque, along with constantly being involved in community initiatives. Whether it’s planting trees, cleaning the beach, and providing a marketing internship program for youth, his business ethic is completely intertwined with his moral values.
“I want to give back, I don’t even incorporate brand awareness, I raise kids here and I want my kids to have a better future,” he said. “Getting involved and leading by example for my kids and my employees to get out there and volunteer, give back, even if it doesn’t help their business, help your community.”
Muhammad not only provides security guard jobs, but he provides the in-house training as well. They provide security guard licensing programs that’s open to anyone over 18 that can legally work in Canada, and has a clean criminal record. Today, Baig has over 150 on-call security guards, with many trained through this program.
His team provides a wide-variety of security services for different events, venues and public locations throughout Burlington and the GTA. Baig said, anyone can benefit from security: It’s a visual deterrent, it makes people who are both hosting or attending an event feel safer, and extra assurance that the events will proceed as intended.
However, Muhammad said there are so many other benefits to hiring security guards, and feels there are some misconceptions. “Right now, in our business, I find a lot of people don’t understand what security can provide,” he said. “It’s not just about a guard that’s going to make an arrest, security can be used for a lot of different purposes.”
The biggest purpose for Baig is the education portion of what they do.
As a client, when you approach Baig Security, they do what’s called a security site audit. They will go to the site, do a walk through and formulate a customized security plan based on the specific safety, and other needs, of the site, event or venue.
“If you are my client, and say you work at a construction site, we will also offer health and safety inspection and educate the client on best practices, these are things we do offer along with the security benefits,” he said.
Their guards are trained to not just be a visual deterrent, but to interact with clients and guests as necessary, keep them informed of what’s happening, provide reassurance along with ensuring things are secure. And while they can make arrests, Muhammad said the goal is always to avoid the worst case scenario.
At some events, the presence of the guards can not only help to keep things safe, but also, from a marketing standpoint, make the event seem more prestigious and organized. This is helpful for those staging a grand opening for a retail store, restaurant, or a real estate open house in a high-end area.
