Water is one of the greatest natural resources we have on this planet. As precious as it is, water can also wreak havoc on your home or place of business if left unchecked.

Water damage is one of the biggest causes of home or business damage, whether it’s through burst pipes, leaky sinks or toilets, faulty appliances, or water seepage. Repairs costs can escalate into the thousands if water damage is present in a home, business or facility.

Prevention is always key to mitigating disaster, but water damage can also be one of the toughest things to pinpoint.

Dale Brace from ServiceMaster of Burlington says their team of experts are well-equipped to tackle residential water damage.

“A lot of times it’s unseen, so it can be leaking for a while until you notice it in your basement,” Brace said. “Then by that time, there’s a lot of damage.”

Unless it’s a broken pipe gushing water or a leaky toilet on the fritz, small leaks or ruptures could cause damage right underneath your nose. Even things like ruptured water lines in a fridge or a leak in a door or window frame could cause the issue.

Basements are often ground zero for these floods and leaks, and while above the surface things may seem dry, water seeps into carpets, pads, subfloors and drywall and can be undetected to the naked eye.

In addition to water damage, water can create secondary damage like mold. Any presence of mold has the potential to cause significant health issues and may escalate restoration costs significantly. The sooner the issue is contained, the better.

When flood recovery occurs in home or business, ServiceMaster uses moisture meters to determine the level of dryness in things like carpet and the drywall. Their tools can measure water levels to see if carpet or drywall needs to be torn up, or if they can salvage parts of it from a flood.

“When you have a water disaster like that, ServiceMaster goes in and monitors the moisture levels and the equipment,” Brace said. “Before the equipment is removed, they make sure everything is dry.”

If it’s just a small leak in your home that is relatively contained, ServiceMaster recommends calling a plumber first to resolve the issue. But for anything of a large, urgent nature, contact ServiceMaster right away so they can deploy their technicians promptly.

In the event you experience a flood in your home or business, ServiceMaster of Burlington is on call around the clock and can often be at your home within a few hours to begin disaster recovery in your home.
