VRPro’s Frigid 10K and Frosty 5K races, a blend of fitness, fun, and philanthropy take place on Sunday, March 17th. Race Director Kelly Arnott is excited to be hosting more than 900 runners this year, the largest ever at the event.

“We’ve got a lot of fast 5K and 10K runners that come to the race. Many use this event to as preparation for the upcoming spring races and the Around the Bay race.” While serious runners appreciate the opportunity to test their speed and endurance, the Frigid and Frosty welcome participants of all ages and fitness levels. From seasoned runners aiming for personal bests to families enjoying a fitness and fun during March Break.

The Frosty 5K is a 29-year tradition that began in Burlington and in the past few years is now being run, along with the Frigid 10K race, along the beautiful Hamilton Waterfront.

Race Day

Both races will begin at 10am outside Collective Arts Brewery on Burlington Street in Hamilton. The route takes runners through Bayfront Park and along Hamilton’s picturesque waterfront trail.

The races end at Collective Arts Brewery where the brewery is opening their doors to the runners, volunteers, and spectators who will be treated to a hot bowl of STAGG chili after the races. Arnott says, “I’m excited about our new venue at Collective Arts Brewery. It’s a much younger feel. We’ll be set up inside the brewery itself. Everyone is invited to buy a beer to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and have fun.”

Growing in popularity

The success of the Frigid 10K and Frosty 5K races has spurred their growth, both in terms of participation and impact. With nearly 1,000 participants expected, it has blossomed into one of the area’s premier winter running events

The runners come from across the Golden Horseshoe, including Toronto. Some of those registered are coming from the U.S. Arnott says, “It’s a fun event. Runners love the waterfront and are looking forward to a warm-up at Collective Arts Brewery with beer and chili.

At the end of the race, each runner will receive a memorable keepsake, a one-of-a-kind finisher’s medal. The pendant is a circle that opens to reveal a picture inside of two runners on the move. The outside is covered in snowflakes and ice. Arnott says, “It’s really cool.”

Stay Above Nutrition will be sampling some of their supplement products for runners. They were developed by a team of scientists, led by Dr. Mark Tarnopolsky at McMaster University.

Fundraising for Joseph Brant Hospital

Beyond the camaraderie and fun, the races are raising funds for the expansion of the mental health and addictions clinic at Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington. So far, this year the Frigid and Frosty Races have raised $2,000.

Arnott says, “It’s part of our overall $400,000 pledge to support Joseph Brant with the Chilly, Frigid and Frosty races over the past 8 years.” The races provide a tangible way for participants to contribute to this fundraising effort while engaging in healthy activity.
