Burlington Helping Burlington rides wave of success into 2024

Launched last summer with the goal of collecting food and donations through the holiday season, the grassroots group shows no signs of slowing down

When a small group of engaged citizens formed Burlington Helping Burlington (BHB) last summer, the goal was to organize a 90-day blitz to support charities  across the city through the holiday season.

The grassroots initiative took off and BHB shows no signs of quitting now: after a whirlwind of events throughout October, November and December they  head into 2024 with a couple of fundraising  events planned for January and February.

The group recently posted their intention to continue on their Fabeook page:

“Burlington, what is your New Year’s resolution? Ours is to help more people in Burlington, and to continue to work with the amazing agencies who help people in Burlington.”

Next up is “Wing Night Out” on Jan. 16 at AB Sports Bar, a community partner that hosted several special events for BHB throughout the fall, as well as the group’s New Year’s Eve bash.

This time around the proceeds will benefit The ROCK (Reach Out Centre for Kids). There will be live music, auction items up for bids, half-price wings and $5.50  Nickel Brook beer. And hockey fans don’t need to worry: the Leafs and Oilers game will be on 15 large-screen TVs around the room.

Those who want to attend Wing Night Out can call 289-222-2525 to book a spot.

The fun continues next month, with “Keep the Party Going”  a Jimmy Buffet-themed fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society on Feb. 10 at Tin Cup Sports Grill.

The event will feature the  Maple Reefer Band as well as prizes and  a silent auction. Those who want to attend can reserve a spot by calling  905-315-7727.

And for those who want to look good while doing some good, BHB hoodies are available to purchase at AB Sports Bar or at Pets N Groom. They are $60, with proceeds going to local charities.

Launched by volunteers Sean Campbell, Michael Desjardins, Julie Neal and Vicky Townley-Trottier on Oct. 1, BHB set a goal of collecting 5,000 pounds of food for the Burlington Food Bank and Food 4 Kids Halton and raising money for Compassion Society of Halton, Reach Out Centre for Kids (ROCK), Rotary Club of Burlington, United Way Halton, Halton Women’s place, Shifra Homes, Carpenter House and Woodview Mental Health and Autism Centre.

BHB is currently working on reports for the holiday drive, and plans to provide an update soon, said Campbell.
