LETTER: Lots of history in those city buildings

'I think it was on Wednesdays, after dinner, the siren would be triggered for the volunteers' practices. The whole town stopped to listen,' writes reader Ted Badger.

Burlington Town Hall and library building on Brant Street, circa 1946.

BurlingtonToday received the following letter in response to this week's Then and Now column.

Our family moved to Burlington in 1959 as my father was hired as the town's first paid tax collector.

His first office was in the old library building on Brant Street (then serving as the town hall). During the building of the new city hall, all the staff were temporarily moved to an empty building on Plains Road East, just east of Maple on the south side. Then they were finally located to our current city hall on Brant Street upon completion. Dad retired in 1981 and lived until 2014.

When we moved here the fire hall was located where the LCBO is now on Elizabeth and Pine (NE corner). There were a few paid firemen but the rest were volunteers. I think it was on Wednesdays, after dinner, the siren would be triggered for the volunteers' practices. The whole town stopped to listen.
