Eye-catching community art at Burlington Public Library

150 artists contributed to display that marks BPL's 150th anniversary

A community art project celebrating Burlington Public Library's 150th anniversary this year is now on display on the third floor of the Central Branch on New Street.

The installation is made up of 150 black and white circular paintings which were done by artists of all ages at events over the summer. Some are abstract, while others are inspired by favourite books.

The paintings have been arranged against a black wall in a room which BPL has redesigned as a multi-purpose hub for studying, socializing and creating.

Stacks of books were removed to open up the space that will also be used for author talks hosted by the library, which is running its second annual BurLitFest this month.

"It's wonderful to see how individually creative each piece is," said Elise Copps, manager of marketing and communications at BPL. "We wanted to celebrate our 150 years with a permanent art piece that represents our community, and we're really pleased with the outcome."
