The roof of the gymnasium at Glenview Public School in Burlington collapsed on Sunday, only two days after students left for the summer break.
Nobody was inside the school when the roof came down.
“The gym had been closed to students and staff prior to the end of the school year due to safety concerns,” Haley Juniper, senior communications officer for Halton District School Board said in a statement. “Our school community and staff have been notified about the incident, and will continue to be updated in the weeks ahead.”
A structural engineering company had been hired to assess the gym before it collapsed, and will continue to work with the school board to determine the appropriate next steps.
On Tuesday afternoon, a drone pilot was taking aerial images and scanning the building to help determine the cause of the incident. Noises coming from inside the school could also be heard, though the entire parking lot was empty and nobody was seen entering or exiting the building.
The school is currently closed to all visitors. No information was provided as to what the plan is for the school, staff, or students in September.
