Burlington artist Horne Cozens to open solo exhibition in Niagara

'Power of Water' opening reception slated for Nov. 5 in Niagara-on-the-Lake

Art lovers can journey into the beauty of water with Burlington-based artist Janet Horne Cozens in her solo exhibition at the Niagara Pumphouse Arts Centre.

The Power of Water runs from Nov. 1 to 26 at the Joyner Gallery. According to a press release, the exhibition pays homage to Ontario's untouched landscapes, where pristine waterfalls, winding rivers, and serene lakes are vividly brought to life.

The Power of Water reflects the deep bond between humanity and the untamed Canadian wilderness. Horne Cozens uses her art to shed light on the delicate balance between our existence and nature's resilience.

"I draw profound inspiration from the heart of the wilderness, coupled with an acute sense of responsibility," she says. "Through my art, I aim to convey the transformative impact of climate change on these landscapes, emphasizing the consequences of our actions on these invaluable ecosystems. Each brushstroke tells the story of water—a tribute to the natural world and a reminder of its fragility."

The artist’s work blends influences from the Group of Seven, First Nations artists and her printmaking background. Her art explores the intricate relationship between the natural world and humanity, using colour, texture and form to evoke the influences of people on these landscapes.

"I hope this exhibition sparks discussions about conservation, sustainability, and collective responsibility," says Horne Cozens. "Together, we can ensure future generations inherit a world where the wilderness waters continue to flourish."

The Power of Water represents a call to action, and viewers are invited to immerse themselves in Ontario's landscapes through the artist’s lens and participate in the dialogue about humanity's connection with nature.

The opening reception on Sunday, Nov. 5 from 2 to 4 p.m. and is open to the public. Attendees will have an opportunity to meet the artist, view the artwork and connect with fellow art enthusiasts while enjoying refreshments. Horne Cozens will share remarks around 2:30 p.m.
