Toronto artist's 'Stockroom' opens at AGB in January

Toronto, ON (December 19) – The Art Gallery of Burlington (AGB) is pleased to announce the first exhibition of 2024 with a solo presentation of Toronto-based artist Jeremy Laing titled Stockroom. The exhibition opens to the public on Friday, January 19 th and runs until Sunday, April 7 th in the Perry Gallery.

Stockroom pulls from the hidden and often forgotten spaces where one hides outdated but not obsolete objects and materials. Laing transforms
this space into a room of tactile and visual delight.

Laing used the physical facilities of the Art Gallery of Burlington as their raw material in creating this exhibition. They worked within the architectural constraints of the Perry Gallery, such as lighting, ceiling tiles, stonework, and sliding glass doors, while also sourcing materials from the AGB's storage rooms. They transformed the storage area into a new showroom, featuring previously mundane items that are now showcased in an entirely new light.

“Stockroom explores the interrelation and transitional potential of people and things, space and surface, materials and meanings—questioning the normative logics of who and what matters and is valued, or not,” says artist Jeremy Laing.

The exhibition draws attention to the oddities, the excess, the obsolete. It is a new container for how we might “see” and “use” these invisible items. The objects on display are choreographed as an epistle of and to craft. Assemblages of tapestries, vessels, and found objects become the tools for social architecture. The space is cut with screens and fabric shrouds, allowing us to peer into the storage room and view the things that lie waiting to be made useful again.
