CELEBRATING: Hayden Secondary turns 10 in style, including visit from namesake Dr. Frank J. Hayden

Husky Nation held a celebratory open house inviting guests to tour the school and share in a walk down memory lane

Dr. Frank J. Hayden Secondary School celebrated 10 years of memories at a special event Friday (May 3) afternoon.

Husky Nation held a celebratory open house inviting guests to tour the school and share in a walk down memory lane.

Students showcased their artwork, while there were special basketball, volleyball and soccer games on the go for anyone wanting to join.

Hayden's Husky mascot was busy meeting and greeting students and teacher, and offering high-fives to all.

Named after Dr. Frank Hayden, a retired professor at the University of Toronto, it was a special moment for many to have him come to celebrate the occasion. Dr. Hayden's own research on the impact of fitness and sport on those with intellectual disabilities helped found the Special Olympics in 1968.

Now 88, he still enjoys sport, and had a chance to watch some of the volleyball and basketball games taking place in the gyms on Friday.

Located in the city's north end, at 3040 Tim Dobbie Dr., the school, which serves more than 1,600 students, was built along with a recreation centre and library to support the city's growth in the Alton neighbourhood.
