UPDATE: Man dies in crash that closes QEW Brant Street ramp for investigation

OPP advises motorists to avoid the area as the ramp will remain closed through the morning

A 26-year-old man has died following a collision on the Brant Street off ramp of the QEW.

The province’s Special Investigations Unit (SIU)  is investigating after a man died in the crash involving a pick-up truck that fled Halton Regional Police (HRP) officers in Burlington early this morning.

Preliminary investigation suggests that at around 3:45 a.m., two HRP officers stopped the driver of a truck for speeding on the Queen Elizabeth Way at Guelph Line. The driver fled. The officers came upon a rolled over pick-up truck at the Brant Street off ramp; it was the same truck that had fled.

All four of the occupants in the truck were taken to hospital where one man was pronounced dead.

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) vehicles are blocking the ramp in both directions, and a tow truck and a flatbed are parked nearby a Dodge Ram pick-up truck that's flipped onto its roof. Several other vehicles are parked along the shoulder of the ramp.

OPP media relations officer Sgt. Kerry Schmidt posted a notice on X (formerly Twitter) that drivers should avoid the area if possible, as the ramp will remain blocked throughout the morning and possibly into the afternoon.

"There are heavy delays right now on the QEW approaching Brant Street," he said. Schmidt also noted that the SIU has invoked its mandate in connection with this incident.

The QEW westbound off-ramp at Brant Street remains closed.

The SIU is urging anyone who may have information about this investigation, including video or photos, to contact the lead investigator at 1-800-787-8529 or online at: https://siu.on.ca/en/appeals.php
